In the summer of 1954, the American student Robert McCabe visited Greece for the first time. He is captivated by the Greek light, the landscape’s natural beauty and the archaeological sites which, at that time, were very similar to the descriptions of the European travellers of the 19th century. He photographs castles, ancient temples and theatres, providing invaluable documentation of a country still “unscathed” by tourist development. On the occasion of the 180th anniversary of its founding, the Archaeological Society of Athens presents the exhibition “Chronography”, with 53 black-and-white photographs from that period.
